The only thing that really matters in the long run is good health, because no matter how much wealth we have or how happy we are, we need to be healthy in order to enjoy it. The best way to ensure good health throughout your life is to start early, when you’re a child. Playing with your friends and getting involved in a sport is the earliest form of exercise a child can have; and as the years go by, it still remains the most enjoyable and fun ways to lose weight, get fit, and lead a healthy life.
If you want to shape up and get fit but find the idea of working out at the gym or following a set routine abhorring, the best alternative is to take up a sport, preferably one that is active and requires a lot of movement. Tennis, badminton, racquetball, football, baseball, swimming, cycling – they’re all good options. Sport plays a large role in regulating your health and keeping it up to scratch because:
- It helps you maintain your weight: When you play a sport that requires you to move around a lot, you expend energy and you tend to lose weight and keep it off for good. Your eating habits are also healthier because you realize the importance of keeping your weight at the optimum level if you want to continue playing well.
- It enhances your mental health: Playing a sport helps boost the level of feel-good chemicals in your brain, especially when you win or when you enjoy the camaraderie with your teammates and opponents. Sports are a great way to relax and unwind from the pressures of work and family.
- It improves your balance and speed: When you improve your game-playing skills, you become faster and more flexible. This makes you more agile and less likely to fall and sustain injuries, either on or off the field/court.
- It keeps your bones healthy: Sports that are played with your feet on the ground and where you’re running or moving fast most of the time help strengthen your bones and prevent them from becoming brittle. This keeps rheumatism and arthritis away even when you grow old.
- It boosts your metabolism: Playing an active sport on a daily basis helps improve your metabolism and expedites your weight loss process. When your metabolism is high, you tend to burn calories even when you’re sedentary.
When you take up a sport that you enjoy as a way to lose weight, you tend to stick to it in the long run because the fun part of it keeps you from throwing in the towel. So if you’re not an amateur sportsperson, here’s all the more reason for you to become one, starting today!

Soooooooo true!!! No amount of money can buy your health back if you do not take care of yourself!
I love doing activities rather than \’work\’ing out. Participating in a sport certainly makes physical activity more fun. Plus, there is the social aspect to most sports. Most recently, I\’ve taken up tennis. I\’m still learning, but its been a blast!
Yeah, people often view \"working out\" as drudgery, while sports are \"fun and games.\" Basically just getting out and moving is what its all about.
I agree completely. I’ve recently starting playing vollyball and tennis as part of my workout and it is definitely easier to stick with that than when I was trying to go to the gym regularly.
